What is A Fulfillment Center?

A fulfillment center is a warehouse that takes internet orders, does pick-and-pack, shipping, inventory management, storage, kitting, and order fulfillment. Order fulfillment means order processing or handling.

There is also third-party fulfillment. This is when a business has another company build and ship its orders. For example, Imagine Supply Chain is a third-party fulfillment center. We store the inventory or products of dozens of companies. We download the orders placed on a business’s website and ship the orders to their customers.

Commercial and Consumer Orders

Fulfillment centers work with both commercial and consumer orders. They can complete orders for national chains, as well as send items to homes. The center not only ships orders, but it does inventory for the eCommerce company. These centers also negotiate shipping rates according to the company’s budget.

Fulfillment vendors also handle any issues with shipping and inventory. If a customer gets the wrong product, the center must check to see why the right order was not picked. If the product is shipped to the incorrect address, the center must absorb the shipping costs.
